Upper Arlington was founded in 1913 by a group of prominent Columbus residents who were seeking a rural retreat from the city. The founders purchased 840 acres of farmland and began developing the area as a residential community. The city was named "Upper Arlington" after the nearby Arlington district of Columbus.
